Our system La Baraque à Huile received the Label Observeur du design 2018 ! A national distinction which rewards our eco-design approach. Design is at the service of used frying oil.

The role of design in La Baraque à Huile

The Oil Shed is a system designed to collect more and better used frying oil. Many initiatives have emerged to more efficiently collect cooking oil from restaurateurs. La Baraque à Huile takes care of household oil. A deposit of 66 million liters of oil per year, certainly less interesting than the cooking oil of restaurateurs, but just as problematic for communities.

La Baraque à Huile, collection of used frying oil

We started with a simple observation:

  • it is not a reflex to take your used oil to a recycling center
  • the national deposit is 66 million liters of used oil
  • only 5% are collected and recycled into bio-fuel

Indeed, many consumers do not know that cooking oil can be transformed into bio-fuel, that the oil thrown in sinks or toilets can clog the pipes, that it is very complicated and expensive for stations. that the oil thrown into the garden pollutes the water tables, etc.

Our goal is to go from 5 to 20% of collected and recycled oil:

  • by setting up a communicating, efficient system based on proximity, La Baraque à Huile
  • facilitate and promote the voluntary supply of oil to waste reception centers

This system, imagined by the design agency C + B Lefebvre, was the subject of an eco-design process taking into account the expectations of users, households, but also waste collectors and communities.

Collect more used frying oil

As said previously, our action is twofold. Firstly, our mission is to make known the essential nature of taking your used cooking oil to a recycling center. La Baraque à Huile is therefore communicating, from its name to the Baraque in itself, to be placed in the waste reception centers.

We are convinced that if the importance of this collection is known, users will make the effort and take their used oil to the recycling center. But we wanted to facilitate the voluntary intake of this oil.

For this, we have developed the Olibox, hermetic 3-liter buckets, average capacity of the fryers, which are given free of charge to users at the recycling center. The center of gravity is low which prevents them from overturning in the car, the hanse facilitates its handling. The Olibox is in the colors of La Baraque à Huile, to convey the message, a 3D flyer in a way!

The operation is simple. You fill your Olibox with your used oil, frying oil, pan base, rancid oil, oil from jars of feta or candied vegetables, etc. Once your Olibox is full, take it to a recycling center. You deposit your full Olibox on La Baraque à Huile, you leave, free of charge, with an empty and clean Olibox.

The waste collector then comes to collect the empty Oliboxes, your used oil is then transformed into bio-fuel, used in your car, to supply your boiler, etc.

Collect used cooking oil better

Collecting more is good, but collecting better is essential.
Before La Baraque à Huile, oil was collected in 300 or 1 liter tub buckets, the same tanks that serve as rainwater collectors. It only takes a few percent of black oil or engine oil in these 000 liters for the oil not to be used as bio-fuel. Significant quantities of the oils collected thus ended up in the incinerators rather than transformed into bio-fuel.

This is where the Olibox, our 3 liter bucket, comes in handy. Beyond facilitating the eco-responsible gesture of citizens, it allows for stricter control of the oil. An operator systematically checks the container of these buckets. If it sees engine oil, acid in an Olibox, it puts it aside but does not pollute the rest of the oil.
Waste collectors see a real interest in it.

The Label Observeur du design 2018, a national distinction

La Baraque à Huile received the Label Observeur du design 2018. Our mission is thus rewarded, the design enters the recycling centers. A fine example of circular economy rewarded with a national design prize.

La Baraque à Huile receives the 2018 Design Observer Label

A motivation for us, whose mission is to make known the importance of this fundraising. As our system is based on communication, this Design Observer Label will help us to publicize our system to accelerate its deployment at the national level.
Thank you therefore to the APCI, the Agency for the Promotion of Industrial Creation, for this distinction which generates great notoriety at La Baraque à Huile.

For your information, at the time of writing this article, 7 waste reception centers are installed in the Rhône-Alpes region. About ten other waste reception centers are being installed in the same region. It is time to deploy ourselves and make our system known throughout France.
